The Motability scheme is a government-funded system that enables disabled people to lease a new car, scooter or electric wheelchair in exchange for their mobility allowance.
You are eligible to join the Motability scheme if you are receiving the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance, or the enhanced rate of the mobility component of its replacement, Personal Independence Payment, or alternatively the War Pensioners Mobility Supplement. The scheme was set up by the government with the aim of making running a car much more affordable and safer for disabled people, and is overseen by the national charity Motability.
To be able to hire a car through the scheme you must have at least 12 months remaining on your award. The Motability scheme offers very attractive benefits to those interested. The vehicle – whether it is a car, scooter or wheelchair – is provided with free insurance, servicing and maintenance costs such as tyres, servicing and MOTs.
A large proportion of dealerships now actively support the Motability scheme and offer the scheme to the general public. You can simply choose the model you would like – including many that have an advance payment of £0 – from the dealership of your choice and your weekly Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment will then cover the entire cost of leasing your car.
In some cases, your disability may require you to choose one from a certain range of cars or to have modifications to the vehicle to ensure you are completely safe. These modifications could help with improving access to the vehicle, with steering and controls, or even just making the car more comfortable and safe for you to drive. If you need a specific car or the modifications to help you and you are unable to afford the advanced payment that is required, the Motability scheme may be able to provide financial help for you.
Once you have chosen your vehicle and any modifications, it’s time to find your nearest dealership, which can help you in getting back on the road!
It really is that simple. If you qualify for the Motability scheme there are a number of different ways to get started. For further information, please contact your local motability specialist.
